This Newbery award winning book takes us to the Deep South, and a plantation on a swamp. It is interesting that even though fiction it is based on a little truth. The book shows hope and ingenuity that these people had in trying to escape slavery. There is a little redemption of the villain and perspective. Good life lessons are extolled through the characters.
